Artist of a Piece in Oxford Art Museum: [2015]
I was selected as an artist to show a photographic work in the Freedom Summer Student Art Response exhibition. My piece was a film photograph that commented on my own interpretation of freedom in response to the prior Freedom Summer festivities in 2014. Because I was a chosen artist, I attended a VIP gallery opening, a student reception, and a student lecture and response to freedom. My piece remained in the museum from January through May.
" My submission represents a personal example of freedom, as well as freedom of expression, with lyrical relevance. It is a film picture taken at a concert I attended. When reflecting on my experiences regarding Freedom Summer, I recalled the emotional connection I obtained with the ballads sang in the Freedom Summer Interactive Tour. Music is a universal freedom that motivated those attending Freedom Summer, as it has motivated groups throughout all of history. It draws community and allows individuals to showcase expression. A concert environment is one of the most liberating experiences for both the audience and the performers. Audience members interact with the emotional experiences of the artists and vice versa. When taking this picture, Damian Kulash was singing lyrics that sung, “If it takes forever, forever it’ll be.” This statement is true about freedom, and this is the attitude the participants of Freedom Summer possessed: determination."
