This project was designed to help us identify an ad campaign that targets a specific audience, making us uncomfortable. Using Photoshop, we redesigned each advertisement to highlight the offensive implications of the identified ad campaigns. Here you can see an exploration of juxtaposition, appropriation, layering, text and image to communicate our desired visual messages. Below are also resources for media literacy. victoria's secretstarbucksmedia literacy resources

Wow your photoshop work looks really great! I love everything you added to the Victoria secret ad. The ribs, measuring tape, and corset really emphasis the point you’re raising.

I love the quality of your ads and you added great details to further accentuate your message, especially in the first ad. Also, I was shocked that Starbucks actually used such a racism ad, especially since they are such a big company worldwide.

Your message is really strong in the Victoria Secret ad, and I also find it a bit jarring that you did not actually have to Photoshop them to look that much skinnier- besides adding the ribs. Their arms and everything already looks skinny, and I wonder if you did not have the before picture I would think that you Photo-shopped their limbs as well.

Victoria's Secret spoof: In terms of technique, I think you use shock value super well! This also speaks to your skill in photoshop- the image you created feels so real that I have a hard time looking at it. Your new ad makes me think not only about weight-related beauty standards, but also about the use of these women as just "bodies" rather than human beings.

Liza, the ad for Victorias Secret is alarming to say the least. I think to have the catch phrase "I love my body" Victorias Secret should have shown several different body types. Yes skinny people should love their body but viewers that see this ad aren't all skinny so where does that leave them being able to love their body? You seem very skilled in using photoshop and all your adjustments create a visually appealing argument.

Great use of your photoshop skills! Like I said to you in person, the ribs showing was so well done I actually thought it was on the original ad! Scary how it just seemed normal for me to see that on models! The original ad seems to be trying to promote body positivity by saying "I love my body" when in reality many girls fall victim to desperation in trying to achieve this dangerously thin look! Usually they result in becoming mentally and physically ill with issues such as body dysmorphia, anorexia and bulimia. The tape measure and corset is perfect to the point of what many girls constantly go through to look this way. Photoshop again is very impressive and realistic looking! You can tell you have great skills!

Your photoshop skills are very professional looking and I've learned to step up my game just by sitting next to you! The ribs are grotesquely a nice touch! the tape measurer and corset look like pat of an original ad. I'm no longer bothered by seeing ads like this because we've been conditioned to see this as normal right... I see it, I roll my eyes, and I do the opposite because I know better. What drives me mad is how these ads target young girls (they look like they're 14-16 with tons of heavy make up) and I saw it when I was in high school with the girls around me. We are now seeing a shift in body positivity and I can only HOPE that VS catches on at some point. (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/11/06/victorias-secret-perfect-body-campaign_n_6115728.html)

Having design skills is one of the interesting talents because it can make an interesting visual picture in the field of advertising.

This is such a great resource that you are providing and you give it away for free. I love seeing websites that understand the value of providing a quality resource for free. It is the old what goes around comes around routine.
