Teacher capabilities:
Identify which of the PYP teacher capabilities you have selected.
I have selected situating learning in global contexts to support understanding of human commonalities (2), promoting student reflection and action in response to learning (4), and selecting teaching approaches, resources, technologies, learning experiences, and assessments that are inclusive and effective fore diverse students (6).
Consider what success in these areas might look like and what approaches you could use to continue learning post workshop.
Success in situating learning in global contexts looks like students not only comparing like experiences across cultures, but seeking out information that will help them understand global perspectives. In art class, I will make sure to provide example artists from a variety of cultures and time periods. We will also look at social issues that not only affect the students here, but affect people all around the world. I will also try to integrate their language learning to reinforce principles.
Success in promoting student reflection and action is not just stopping a project after students complete the work. I will have students upload pictures and videos to Seesaw in tandem with context and reflection of their project. I also will conduct debrief sessions after projects are complete where we examine and critique each other's works and ideas. Conversation of action can happen during these debrief sessions, and students can choose to take their project further.
Inclusive teaching happens when resources and experiences are curated for a wide variety of learners. I will use visuals, video, text and audio in my lessons, as well as artists from across the world. I will reach out to my students by having them speak on behalf of their own background to get a better understanding of how we can integrate individual practices and ideas. I will conduct a variety of formative assessments, and be sure to hear from all students, even those chose not to share. I can do this by doing a variety of inquiry exercises rather than just questions.
Consider what evidence would demonstrate your growth as a PYP educator.
My growth can be documented through my pre-planning and post reflection. My lesson planning should now contain areas of all PYP criteria. I should also be reflecting myself as a teacher, as well as leading reflections for my students. Reflection is a constant factor in growth.
- I will integrate transdisciplinary and disciplinary concepts, knowledge, and skills in a way that supports a coherent learning experience for students
- I will situate learning in global contexts that supports students' understanding of human commonalities (for example, through transdisciplinary themes)
- I will support students to initiate and engage in their own inquiries
- I will promote student reflection and action in response to their learning.
- I will establish, engage and maintain collaborative relationships that support the wellbeing of the learning community
- I will select teaching approaches, resources, technologies, learning experiences and assessments that are inclusive and effective for diverse students
