How is my understanding of PYP principles and practices evolving?
My understanding of PYP principles are evolving because not only do I now know the components of the PYP curriculum, but I am learning the justification for this particular curriculum and I am learning how to use it in practice. Similar to PYP curriculum, my teaching philosophy includes the concept of agency to promote engaged learning. Now seeing how it fits in the context of PYP, I can encourage agency even more in my practice.
In what ways can I apply learning from this workshop in my own learning and teaching?
This workshop is opening my eyes to the general classes that my students experience. Because I am a single subject teacher, I do not see how students utilize learner profiles and language. I will now mention learner profiles in my teaching to connect to their general classes. I also will try to highlight language learning and connect to my students by asking them to teach me language concepts.
How is agency supported and nurtured through this workshop?
Agency is supported because we are choosing methods for response! I use this tactic in my classes at all times. I never ask students to create identical work.
How am I developing international-mindedness in my students?
I am developing international-mindedness in my students by sharing art and artists from all over the world. I am also encouraging students to learn about contemporary art and artists by documenting their findings on their own in New York City! I try to stray from Western and Eurocentric art, and I always compliment historical art with contemporary art.
How do I get the learning of language to encompass being international minded?
Language learning should have context. Why are we learning this language? Who speaks this language? Who can we communicate with? How can we communicate? These discussions will help to bring global context to language learning.
How am I embedding the learner profile into learning and teaching?
I am embedding the learning profile through my practice of inquiry-based learning, communication through art and reflections, open-mindedness about artists and artwork, risk-taking through trying new mediums, and principled character through sharing tools and cleaning up.
How am I encouraging students to engage with local and global issues and challenges?
Artists from all over the world are tackling social issues through art and activist work. In art, we often investigate global issues such as climate change, racism and immigration. I am always asking students to inquire about global issues.
